Annotation The M.A. program provides university courses in three main areas (a) English linguistics (grammar and other fields including diachrony), (b) British and American literature and literature theory and (c) British and American cultural studies at the academic level corresponding to the M.A. program. All parts of the program contain a number of specialized courses which the students can choose from. Although there is a great deal of space for individual specialization, all areas of the field of study have to be covered to some minimal extent. Apart from the above-mentioned fields, students can attend optional courses in English for special purposes, translation/interpreting courses (requiring a working knowledge of Czech), etc. This program can be studied as either a single or double major/minor. The double program can be combined with all other double programmes at PU. The distinction between the single and double major programs is in the number of credits (i.e. courses) required for graduation. Requirements for admission No later than 31 May we need to receive the following documents in English/Czech/Slovak language for Master's degree programme: 1. a certified copy of the document certifying your education (nostrification of education) 2. Students continuing with their master's degree can request nostrification of their education at any institute of higher education or university in the Czech Republic (for example at Palacký University Olomouc https://www.upol.cz/en/students/degree-students/diploma-recognition/ 3. motivational letter 4. CV 5. certificate documenting a knowledge of the English language on a minimum level of C1 6. Diploma supplement of the Bachelor's degree (may be replaced by a list of credits from the Bachelor's degree programme; the diploma supplement or list of credits has to be certified by the study department of the relevant university) 7. An example of a written work in the field (language or literature). Minimally 10 pages long, in ideal case the B.A. thesis. On the basis of the above-mentioned documents and certified copies, your application may be either accepted or rejected. Validation of your foreign education in the Czech Republic is essential for the decision regarding your admission to the program. Enrolment in Studies Report for registration for the course at the relevant time, date and with the documents in accordance with the instructions and information you received by post in written form together with the admission decision during June. The preliminary term for enrolment is set at the middle of September. https://anglistika.upol.cz/ Graduates' profile The graduate receives the M.A. degree in English philology. They acquire a fluency in the English language, a knowledge of English grammar (including theoretical disciplines in linguistics) and a general knowledge of British and American literature and cultural studies. Graduates are able to perform independent and creative work, follow academic literature in their field, interpret it and apply the theoretical research results in their work. These skills enable the graduates to follow current development on the labour market. They will be able to adapt to changes thanks to the attained ability of individual lifelong learning. Graduates may become teachers, translators and interpreters, work in business, tourism, administration or, of course, continue with the Ph.D. program in the English language or English and American literature. Employability prospect On the level of the M.A. degree the main expertise of the graduates is a knowledge of a certain theoretical philological discipline: linguistics or literature. They will also have achieved language fluency, overall cognitive abilities and a general cultural and social knowledge. The study is multifaceted in order to allow for a narrow individual specialization, prepare the graduates for the modern world and make possible their permanent employability with respect to ongoing social, economic and technological changes. Possible job positions Graduates of the English Philology M.A. program can find jobs in the following range of companies: - International companies and firms which deal with foreign partners; - Diplomatic and international organizations; - In the school system as teachers of English (after passing a special pedagogical module); - As translators and interpreters; - In the state service, in politics and non-profit organizations; - Thanks to their research ability they can be members of research teams in the field of their study; - Thanks to their creativity and cognitive flexibility they can adapt to any field requiring an expert with a general knowledge of humanities. |
